Rock versions of contemporary Americana were also prominent. However, the group eschewed the former band's avant-garde and world music influences in favor of a slower, groove-based " bar band" approach strongly oriented toward rhythm and blues (the band often featured female backing vocalists characteristic of the genre), gospel music and reggae. Like the Grateful Dead, the Jerry Garcia Band played rock music that was influenced by blues, folk, country, and jazz in an improvisatory milieu that largely served as a framework for Garcia's solos. Jerry Garcia's musical interests were famously varied, and this was reflected in the diverse music played by his band. Melvin Seals had the next longest tenure, serving as keyboardist from 1980 onward. The one constant member besides Garcia himself was bassist John Kahn, who served as Garcia's principal musical collaborator outside of the Grateful Dead after 1970. As with the Grateful Dead, numerous archival live sets from the Jerry Garcia Band have been released in the decades since Garcia's passing.Over the years, the lineup of the Jerry Garcia Band changed many times. A version of the band, rechristened JGB, continued touring after Garcia's death in 1995 and was briefly led by Kahn (who died in 1996), then helmed by Seals. The band's lineup shifted quite a bit over the years, though bassist John Kahn and keyboard player Melvin Seals were the most regular sidemen in the band. Regular live performances followed during the '80s and '90s, plus the live album Jerry Garcia Band, recorded in 1990. His most widely known project was the Jerry Garcia Band, which formed in 1975 and produced one studio album, 1978's Cats Under the Stars. A masterly guitarist and songwriter, and a highly underrated vocalist, Garcia was a true music lover, involving himself in numerous non-Dead projects over the years. For many, he was the embodiment of the freewheeling artistic spirit of the 1960s. Though he was chiefly known as the leader of the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia was much more than that.
